McMillan
Veterinary Clinic was waiting to receive the latest information from the
manufacturers of ProHeart 6 before making a statement regarding the status of
this product. The news received today is that ProHeart 6 will be on
a manufacture backorder through the end of the summer.
This
is a MANUFACTURE backorder, NOT a safety recall. This is a nationwide shortage,
affecting all veterinary clinics. McMillan Veterinary Clinic is very
confident in the safety and efficacy of ProHeart 6.
So,
what should our clients do? We recommend your pet going an ORAL heartworm
prevention for the next 6 months. We are NOT encouraging anyone to wait
until ProHeart 6 returns to the market. Zoetis, the distributor of
ProHeart 6, will honor their heartworm guarantee IF clients and McMillan
Veterinary Clinic can show a written record of continuous use of heartworm
prevention.
Example #1: My pet is due on May 25, 2015 for his ProHeart 6 injection.
I will pick up an oral heartworm prevention (Heartgard, Trifexis,
TriHeart) at or before May 25th, and schedule an
appointment for my pet's ProHeart 6 injection in six months while
at McMillan Veterinary Clinic.
Example # 2: My pet is now OVERDUE his ProHeart 6 injection by 30
days. I will come in for a heartworm test and if negative will start oral
heartworm prevention (Heartgard, Trifexis, TriHeart) and schedule an appointment
for my pet's ProHeart 6 injection while at McMillan Veterinary Clinic.
The
American Heartworm Society and McMillan Veterinary Clinic recommend yearly
heartworm tests. Specifically, if there has been any lapse in the giving of
heartworm prevention, which is why a record of compliance is so important.
Again,
McMillan Veterinary Clinic is very sorry for any inconvenience for you and your
pet. Be aware we are doing everything possible to ensure your pet's
health.
Please
call and speak with one of our associates with any questions or concerns, so
that we may continue to keep your pet happy and healthy.
